Linux

I have finally entered the world of Linux!

Prompted by the demise of my hard drive, a general fed-up-ness with Windoze and a yen to sample the delights of an open-source operating system (since using Firefox), I've installed Mandriva Linux 2006.

I had a devil of a time getting it installed on my Dell Inspiron 510m, it wasn't happy with the graphics card and I kept getting the Green Screen of Death - until I just let the whole thing install and only then started fiddling with the graphical settings. I'll write a full HOWTO sometime...

Why Mandriva? Well, why not. There are, like, hundreds of different flavours to choose from and, well, a mate of mine uses it and had the DVD and offered to help me install it.

If you want to try it out before downloading an entire DVD or 3 CD set, or (shudder) buying it, you can get a bootable Live CD version called Mandriva Move
