Another War for Oil?

So much for Vietnam being about the protection of South Vietnam's "freedom" from the Communists in North Vietnam (and the Russians, of course).

It was for oil, as usual. Why else does the US ever get involved in the internal affairs of other countries? Replace "communist" with "terrorist" and "Ho Chi Min" with "Saddam" and you've got the same old theme: the US deploying troops in an oil-rich region, which is threatened by forces unsympathetic to the US's need for cheap oil et voila: WAR!

The US brands anybody who hinders their quest for cheap oil as Bad Guys and unilaterally attacks them with hi-tech US firepower, without the blessing of the U.N. This creates lots of jobs in the US, especially the weapons-manufacturing-related industries, and boosts the US economy. Unfortunately the lives and homes of thousands of civillians of the country they are supposed to be liberating are lost, but the US Armed Forces and media plays this down and even brands the civillians as "collaborators" who deserved what they got. Atrocities commited by drug-crazed teenage GI's in the jungle are never reported until much, much later on, if ever. The US is then installs a "friendly" (read Puppet) government, who show their gratitude by giving all the Oil contracts to US companies, with no competition from rivals (like Russia) and no comment from the US when they ruthlessly crush local opposition (like the Saudis).

How come the Saudi regime enjoys the full support of the US, despite its reputation as being far more repressive and totalitarian than the Taliban or Saddam could ever hope to be? Because they Play Ball with Uncle Sam, of course. Just let the Saudis try to award an Oil contract to a non-US company and see how quickly the subject of 9/11 and the number of Saudi Nationals on the planes gets brought up and their violent treatment of dissidents gets used to replace the Saudi Royal Family with another Puppet regime and secure yet another oil-rich nation for the US!
